Говоря́т, что they say that слоны́ и обезья́ны elephants and monkeys  о́чень у́мные живо́тные.[are] very intelligent animals Но и други́е живо́тные but other animals are то́же не дураки́.  no fools either Вот, посмотри́те, here, take a look каки́х у́мных живо́тных я ви́дел. what smart animals I saw

Умная соба́ка Smart dog

У меня́ была́ I used to have больша́я соба́ка. a big dog Её зва́ли Джим. her name was Jim Э́то была́ it was о́чень дорога́я соба́ка. a very expensive dog Она́ сто́ила she cost три́ста рубле́й. three hundred rubles

А ле́том, in summer когда́ я жил на да́че, when I lived  at my dacha (summer house) каки́е-то во́ры some thieves укра́ли у меня́ э́ту соба́ку. stole this dog from me Они́ примани́ли её мя́сом they lured her with some meat и увели́ её с собо́й. and took her with them     

Вот я иска́л, иска́л э́ту соба́ку so I looked and looked for this dog и нигде́ её не нашёл. and didn’t find her anywhere И вот я одна́жды прие́хал в го́род and so, one time I came back to the city на свою́ городску́ю кварти́ру. to my city apartment И сижу́ там, горю́ю, I am sitting there, grieving что у меня́ пропа́ла that I lost така́я ди́вная соба́ка. such an amazing dog 

Вдруг слы́шу, suddenly I hear кто́-то на ле́стнице позвони́л. somebody rang [a bell] on the stairs Я открыва́ю дверь. I open the door И мо́жете себе́ предста́вить and can you imagine – передо мно́й in front of me на площа́дке on the landing сиди́т моя́ соба́ка. sits my dog

А како́й-то ве́рхний жиле́ц some upstairs tenant мне говори́т: says to me
– Ах, wow кака́я у вас у́мная соба́ка what a smart dog you have – она́ сама́ сейча́с позвони́ла. she has  just rung the bell herself Она мо́рдой ткну́лась she poked her mug в электри́ческий звоно́к onto electrical doorbell и позвони́ла, and rang чтоб вы ей откры́ли дверь. so you open the door to her

Это о́чень жаль, it’s too bad что соба́ки не уме́ют говори́ть. that dogs can’t talk  А то бы она́ рассказа́ла, otherwise she would tell  кто её укра́л who stole her и как она́ попа́ла в го́род. and how she got into town

Наве́рно, perhaps во́ры привезли́ её the thieves brought her на по́езде в Ленингра́д on the train to Leningrad и там хоте́ли её продать. and there wanted to sell her А она от них убежа́ла but she ran away from them и, наве́рно, до́лго and probably for a long time бе́гала по у́лицам, was running on the streets пока́ не нашла́ свой знако́мый дом, until she found her familiar house где она жила́ зимо́й. where she lived in the winter

Тут она подняла́сь по ле́стнице there she went up the stairs на четвёртый эта́ж. to the fourth floor Полежа́ла у на́ших двере́й. lied for a while by our door Пото́м ви́дит, and then she sees что ей никто́ не открыва́ет, that no one is opening  взяла́ и позвони́ла. so she just rang the bell

Ах, я о́чень обра́довался, oh, how happy I was  что нашла́сь моя́ соба́ка, that my dog was found поцелова́л её [I] kissed her и купи́л ей and bought her большо́й кусо́к мя́са. a big piece of meat

Очень у́мная ло́шадь A very smart horse

Кро́ме гу́ся, besides a goose ку́рицы и поросёнка, a chicken and a piglet я ви́дел ещё I have seen more о́чень мно́го у́мных живо́тных. very intelligent animals И об э́том я пото́м вам расскажу́. and I will tell you about it later А пока́ на́до сказа́ть right now I need to say не́сколько слов a few words об у́мных лошадя́х. about intelligent horses    

Соба́ки едя́т dogs eat варёное мя́со. cooked meat Ко́шки пьют молоко́ cats drink milk и едя́т пти́чек. and eat birdies Коро́вы ку́шают траву́. cows eat grass Быки́ то́же жрут траву́ bulls also stuff themselves on grass и бода́ют люде́й. and [they] butt people

Ти́гры, tigers эти наха́льные живо́тные, these sassy animals пита́ются сыры́м мя́сом. feed themselves on raw meat Обезья́ны ку́шают monkeys eat оре́шки и я́блоки. nuts and apples Ку́ры клюю́т chickens peck on кро́шки и ра́зный му́сор. crumbs and all kinds of garbage

А скажи́те, пожа́луйста, now tell me please что ку́шает ло́шадь? what does a horse eat? Ло́шадь ку́шает таку́ю поле́зную еду́, a horse eats such healthy food кото́рую де́ти ку́шают. that children eat  

Ло́шади ку́шают овёс. horses eat oats А овёс  and oats are– это и есть овся́нка и геркуле́с. oatmeal and cereal А овся́нку и геркуле́с oatmeal and cereal де́ти ку́шают are eaten by children и благодаря́ э́тому and thanks to that быва́ют си́льные, they happen to be strong здоро́вые и сме́лые. healthy and brave  

Нет, ло́шади не дураки́, no, horses are no fools что они́ ку́шают овёс. because they eat oats Ло́шади о́чень у́мные живо́тные, horses are very smart animals потому́ что они́ едя́т тако́е поле́зное because they eat such a healthy де́тское блю́до. children’s food Вдоба́вок in addition ло́шади лю́бят са́хар, horses love sugar э́то то́же пока́зывает, which also shows что они́ не дураки́. that they are no fools

Сравни́тельно у́мная ко́шка  Somewhat smart cat

Одна́ хозя́йка one house-lady уе́хала по дела́м left on some business и забы́ла, and forgot что у неё на ку́хне оста́лась ко́шка. that in her kitchen there was a cat
А у ко́шки бы́ло and the cat had три котёнка, three kittens кото́рых на́до бы́ло всё вре́мя корми́ть. whom she had to feed all the time

Вот на́ша ко́шка проголода́лась and so our cat got hungry и ста́ла иска́ть, and started looking for что бы ей тако́е поку́шать. something to eat
А на ку́хне but in the kitchen никако́й еды́ не́ было. there was no food of any sort

Тогда́ ко́шка вы́шла в коридо́р. then the cat went into the hallway  Но и в коридо́ре but in the hallway она́ то́же ничего́ хоро́шего не нашла́.she didn’t find anything good either 

Тогда́ ко́шка подошла́ к одно́й ко́мнате then the cat came up to one room и чу́вствует че́рез дверь,and she smells through the door что там че́м-то прия́тным па́хнет. that something there gives out a pleasant odor И вот ко́шка ла́пкой and so the cat with her paw ста́ла открыва́ть э́ту дверь. started opening the door

А в э́той ко́мнате in this room жила́ одна́ тётка, lived one woman кото́рая ужа́сно боя́лась воро́в. who was terribly afraid of robbers И вот сиди́т эта́ тётка у окна́, his woman is sitting by the window ку́шает пирожки́ eating piroshki (little pies) и дрожи́т от стра́ха. and trembling with fear  И вдруг ви́дит, suddenly she sees что дверь в её ко́мнату that the door to her room тихо́нько открыва́ется. is slowly opening

Тётка, испуга́вшись, говори́т: frightened, the woman says
– Ой, кто там? who is there?
Но никто́ не отвеча́ет. but no one answers Тётка поду́мала, the woman thought что это во́ры, that those were robbers откры́ла окно́ opened the window и вы́прыгнула во двор.  and jumped into the yard

И хорошо́, it’s a good thing что она́, ду́ра, that she, the fool жила́ на пе́рвом этаже́, lived on the first floor  а то бы  она слома́ла себе́ но́гу otherwise she would break her leg и́ли что́-нибудь. or something А тут она то́лько but now she only  немно́жко уши́блась slightly got bumped и расква́сила себе́ нос. and busted her nose

Вот тётка побежа́ла the woman ran звать дво́рника, to call the caretaker а на́ша ко́шка and our cat тем вре́менем in the meantime откры́ла ла́пкой дверь, opened a door with her paw нашла́ на окне́ четы́ре пирожка́, found four little pies on the windowsillсло́пала их gobbled them up и сно́ва пошла́ на ку́хню and went back to the kitchen к свои́м котя́там. to her kittens

Вот прихо́дит there comes дво́рник с тёткой. the caretaker with the woman И ви́дит – and he sees никого́ в кварти́ре нет. there is nobody in the apartment
Дво́рник рассерди́лся на тётку – the caretaker got angry with the woman заче́м она его зря позва́ла, why did she call him for nothing – вы́ругал её cursed at her и ушёл. and went away

А тётка се́ла у окна́  and the woman sat by the window и сно́ва хоте́ла and again wanted заня́ться пирожка́ми. to get down with piroshki И вдруг ви́дит: and then she sees никаки́х пирожко́в нет. there are no piroshki there Тётка поду́мала, the woman thought что это она сама́ их съе́ла that she herself had eaten them и от стра́ха позабы́ла. and out of fright forgot it И тогда́ она голо́дная легла́ спать. and she went to bed hungry
А у́тром прие́хала хозя́йка next morning the house lady returned и ста́ла аккура́тно корми́ть ко́шку. and resumed methodical feeding of the cat
